Experimenting with mind-altering substances in college
College is a popular time to experiment with mind-altering substances. You’re young, finally on your own and free from parental supervision, so the temptation to try something “dangerous” and “risky” is bound to occur. I’m not promoting drug use, but I understand why drugs are more prevalent on college campuses. There’s a curiosity inside young adults; a craving for the unknown that yearns to be satisfied.
One of the most well-liked recreational drugs offered in college is marijuana; also referred to as cannabis. Kids usually call it reefer, pot, weed, gonja, grass and/or Mary Jane. Marijuana is popular due to its supposed calming effects on the human body, psychedelic effects on the mind, and popularization is films such as ‘Half Baked” and television programs like ‘That 70’s Show.” Obviously, marijuana is illegal but it’s surprising how readily available this illegal substance is at practically every college campus.
Smoking marijuana once probably won’t do much harm. You might even enjoy a good “buzz” from the experience. However, habitual use can cause major problems. This is why you must be cognizant of not crossing the line from experimentation to regular abuser. People who smoke pot everyday expose themselves to a myriad of health risks including brain damage, lethargic behavior, and memory loss.

Even more distressing about daily marijuana use is that it routinely leads to experimenting with other drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and/or crystal meth. That is why marijuana is commonly referred to as a “gateway drug.” It leads to more dangerous and risky substances which are linked to debilitating addiction and death.
I strongly advise never experimenting with cocaine, heroin, or any substance of similar nature. These substances are incredibly addicting and have severe side effects which can harm you permanently.
So remember, if you’re set on experimenting with recreational drugs, remember the verb in that statement—experimenting. Try it once, enjoy the experience, but do not become a habitual user. And never, ever try harsh substances such as cocaine or heroin.
